Design Concepts Unveiled for Massive Urban Park

The team designing a massive urban park west of downtown Lakeland unveiled three concepts today and asked community members to let them know which features they prefer.

People attending two sessions today about Bonnet Springs Park were asked to give feedback via a scorecard, and those who weren’t able to get there will be able to review the plans (below) and fill out an online survey, expected to be available later this week via the park website and Facebook page.

Posters set up at the Magnolia Building gave background information, showed the findings from July 19 public meetings and outlined three possible design approaches.

The designs focus respectively on nature, culture and local history.

The final design, expected to be presented in late December, will likely encompass elements of all three, according to planners from Sasaki, the Boston firm selected to design the project.

Windsong Park Inc., a nonprofit organization, in February announced plans to build a park on roughly 180 acres of privately owned land west of Kathleen Road and George Jenkins Boulevard.

Community donations will be sought for the project, expected to cost $50 to $60 million.

The roughly 300 people who filled out surveys on the park in June expressed a preference for these uses, in order:

  • Walking paths
  • Amphitheater
  • Bicycle trails
  • Botanical garden
  • Park train

Here are the presentations that were shown on posters at the Magnolia Building today, followed by the scorecard participants were asked to fill out.
