Black History Month! 🌿

Black History Month

February is an exceptional month for our nation as we celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the United States. In honor of Black History Month, Bonnet Springs Park has several fun events planned throughout the month! Mark your calendars now for these free, family-friendly events!

Afro Fusion

Our first event of the month was Afro Fusion by LIVE2MOVE (or LIVE2MOVE through Afro Fusion Fitness) led by Kirmari Kasambayi! Kirmari teaches regularly at the Orlando Ballet School and various Central Florida locations. The class was a blend of African, Caribbean, and hip hop dance styles and was open for all ages.

Over 150 members of our community attended this fun event! Thank you to everyone who attended! Miss out on this event? Stay tuned to our calendar of events and social media for the latest schedule of events at the Park!

Saturday, February 11 Events! 🌿

Nature Narrator

Join us for an outdoor storytime at Bonnet Springs Park that celebrates the achievements of a local Black author. We will begin storytime at 10am followed by a fun activity. Seating will be at the Outdoor Classroom and families are encouraged to use our tiered bench seating. If there is inclement weather, Nature Narrator will be held in the GiveWell Community Foundation Nature Center Classroom.

Be sure to stick around as KUUMBA Dance will immediately follow and include African folk dance, percussion skills, and songs.

Kuumba Dance

KUUMBA Dance, a community organization out of Tampa Florida, will showcase their traditional West African dance and drumming styles from across the continent of Africa and the African diaspora on BSP’s Family Lawn!

Join us to watch and participate in the fun as both the adult and children’s dance teams share this historical art form. After their performance, KUUMBA will lead an all ages and all abilities class for any skill level to learn some moves.

KUUMBA Dancers and Drummers are dedicated to fostering and promoting the historical contribution of African culture. They strive to present an authentic experience for their audiences while preserving and nurturing the art form for generations to come.

February 24 & 25 Events! 🌿

Movie on the Lawn

BSP will feature “Black Panther” for our February Movie on the Lawn! Black Panther is Marvel’s first film with an African American director and first major superhero film with a predominantly African American cast.

Join the community to experience this iconic and beloved movie under the stars alongside our very first Black Owned Business and Artisan Market: Handmade & Homegrown!

STEM in the Park

Join us on Saturday, February 25th from 10am-12pm in the Nature Classroom to learn about the connections between geometry and art.
Learn about Alma Woodsey Thomas, a famous Black artist known for bold, geometric patterns. Once you learn, it’s time to create your own geometric art and help us build a wall mural of bright colors and beautiful shapes!
